ABOUT BREEDING
Our kennel is quite small and our purpose with breeding is to make sure our dogs have a great passion for hunting and a lot of energy and diversity, but at the same time they need to be trainable and to be able to relax, when this is what we ask of them.

The Danish Field Champion, Hjortlund's Zita, is the base of Kennel Birkemosen. In the Spring of 2006, 15% of all the wire-haired pointers who won prizes on field trials in the open classes were descendents of Zita. This clearly points out her excellent breeding qualities.

We try our very best to affect and stimulate the puppies by making sure they have a lot of human contact and care. The puppies are always born in our house and they stay inside with us until they are around 4 weeks old. At this time the puppies are moved out into the dogs yard where they have more room to play around and get a lot more challenges.

Whenever we have a litter of puppies, we always handle them a lot, so that they will get used to the interaction with people. We make sure they experience new things and sounds every day so that they are well prepared to move on to their new home with many new experiences.

SELECTING THE BREEDING DOG
Our wire-haired pointers are used for all sorts of hunting, and therefore we need diverse hunting dogs. For instance, they must be able to convert from hunting for partridges in the beet fields to duck hunting - not to mention the forest hunting, where they are hunting for deer.

Of course there are many important factors in this crucial phase of selecting a dog for breeding. Among the things we look at are the passion for hunting, the diversity, the psyche and the exterior. When making the selection we may use the dog's results for the field work, where the dog must work with a true joy for retrieving and a great eagerness on land as well as in water. The results for the dog's work on the track (3 hours and perhaps 20 hours blood track) is also quite central.

The utility test (VGP) is the ultimate test for us, and when a dog has been through this demanding trial, it gives a great idea of what the dog consists of. This gives us a superb starting point for selecting the right dog for breeding. Of course a dog might be unlucky at a trial, but a lot of the time you will be able to see the same factors from one test to the next.

In addition the dog must be calm and sociable around the house.
